Psychology Trip to Howletts

“On Tuesday 27 June, the Year 12 Psychology classes went to Howletts Zoo to help gain a further understanding about the psychology of animals. We did this through the lion and elephant talks that took place throughout the day, teaching us about the rewilding of 13 African elephants who are currently located in an 8-acre enclosure but will eventually be relocated back to their natural habitat as they start a new life in southern Kenya. To help prepare the elephants for their journey, the keepers are teaching the herd to respond to prompts to help them feel comfortable entering and exiting the individually designed transport crates. If this happens, it will be the first time in history that a herd of elephants are rewilded in the world. We all had a great day. We learned a lot about how psychology is used in the wider world and saw first hand how the theories we learn in the classroom are put into practice.”
