Gamelan Workshop

On Friday 4 March, we were visited by a real Javanese Gamelan orchestra. All Year 8 classes took part in a workshop as part of their work this term on the musical traditions of Indonesia.  Memorising the repeating patterns was a challenge but the students did brilliantly. The gongs made a particularly impressive sound, with the largest gong being tuned to one of the lowest pitches which can be heard by the human ear. The Year 12 A Level Music class also took part in a workshop which informed their study of how Debussy was inspired by Gamelan music to write 'Pagodes', one of the A Level set works.
