Remote Learning

How does remote learning work?

It is essential that students are prepared and ready for any online lessons which are required in the school year. Teachers will use email, Google Classroom or Google Meet to set lessons which are aligned with the usual school curriculum. Some adaptations may need to be made for practical subjects like PE. Lessons will follow the same timings as the usual school day. We expect students to engage fully in lessons and they should:

  • Keep their cameras on and be muted (unless they are asked to unmute their microphones)
  • Use the group chat to contribute and ask questions
  • Focus on the lesson and not be distracted
  • Complete set work to given deadlines
  • Stick to the timings and routines of the normal school day

We recommend that students choose a place to work that is quiet and free from the traffic of others while they are online. Research suggests that facing a wall is better than looking out of a window. Students should make sure that IT equipment is fully charged and that they are prepared for a good day's work!

During any period of remote learning, we will do our very best to keep things as normal as possible and to make the learning experience a positive one. Teachers, Student Support Managers and Directors of Learning will still be there for students if they need any additional help or support.

Conduct during Online Lessons

Our normal high expectations of behaviour are still relevant for online lessons.  Students should be respectful and courteous to others during these live lessons and follow the teachers’ instructions regarding interaction.

Students should have their cameras on during live lessons and should therefore ensure that they are appropriately dressed for lessons and in a suitable working area.

How can I support my child with their remote learning?

Adjusting to remote learning can take students some time, so please discuss our expectations with them and ensure that they are ready for learning.

If you are having issues with or require technology to support online learning, please contact the relevant Student Support Manager. We will contact you if we have any concerns with student attendance, completion of work or engagement in lessons.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. Through remote learning, teachers will use a variety of feedback techniques, including comments on Google Classroom, whole class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms.

What additional support is available for students with particular needs?

We recognise that some pupils, for example those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support.  In these cases, the SEND department will liaise with students and parents/carers to ascertain the level of support required. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your Student Support Manager or the SEND department.

What if I have further questions?

Students can ask their teachers in school if they have any further questions. All arrangements are subject to local and national guidance and dependent on the reason for the remote learning being necessary. Any additional questions can be sent to office@highworth.kent.sch.uk
