Trip to China
During October half-term 3 members of staff took 22 students from years 11 & 12 on a whistle-stop tour to three Chinese cities; Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai. During our visit to Beijing students saw the famous Giant pandas at Beijing zoo, visited Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, tried their hand at Chinese calligraphy, sampled tea in a traditional tea-ceremony, and were entertained by a spectacular acrobat show.
The students visited a family in the Hutongs, (traditional housing in the old part of the city), were treated to authentic home cooked food, and were able to see and buy locally made craft items.
At the gardens of the Temple of Heaven they joined in with local Chinese playing traditional games, and were able to watch locals playing chequers and performing gymnastics.
During our stay in Beijing we visited the Great Wall, and became ‘heroes’ by climbing to the top of a section to enjoy the spectacular views. An overnight train, and the party arrived in a damp Xi’an, where we visited the Terracotta Army museum, cycled 9 miles around the city walls, and were able to watch Buddhist monks at work and prayer at the Wild Goose Pagoda.
A walk along the waterfront, and an impromptu performance of a rap-song dedicated to our excellent and attentive guide, was the perfect end to an exhausting but most enjoyable visit which will be remembered by the students for a long time.
